14 Cozy Christmas Living Room Decor Ideas

It's a tradition on this blog for me to share a Christmas home tour. Today I want to share the heart of our home during Christmas time - our cozy living room. Here's 14 ideas that you can use to get that cozy Christmas feel in your own home.

Our Cozy Christmas Living Room

1. Set A Color Scheme

The easiest way to bring a cohesive and cozy look to your holiday home is by decorating with a clear color scheme. Whether your preference is for wintry blues, neutral tones, or retro brights, you can bring a unique look to life with color.

This year, I leaned into the traditional Christmas colors of deep green and classic red paired with accents from nature. I'm not normally a red person, but it feels so right this time of year. I've used traditional red as a secondary color rather than the main show. You'll see it in a bunch of berries in a vase, a red ribbon on the tree, or in a pillow or throw.

2. Decorate with Greenery

Think of cozy winter and scenes of snow and greenery instantly come to mind. Using faux greenery or fresh greenery in your Christmas decor is a necessity. Add branches to art or on a bookshelf for texture and colour. Tiny faux trees sprinkled around your home are a quick way to bring a cozy feel to any room.

Last year, I strung multiple garlands together on our fireplace mantel and I loved the look so much, I repeated it again this year for our Organic Traditional Christmas Mantel. I paired the greenery with velvet ribbons and shiny bells. Its a popular interior design style you'll find in many living rooms this season.

3. Ample Throw Pillows

Pillow covers with seasonal motifs, plaid pillows, or in soft textures can bring that cozy vibe to your home. If you have little time to decorate, you can simply change out your pillow covers for a cozier ambiance. A sofa piled with pillows is inviting and can bring you warmth and comfort on cold nights!

4. Use Fun Gift Wrap

A Christmas decorating idea that often gets overlooked is using your gift-wrapped presents as decor. I like to wrap my gifts in wrapping paper that coordinates with the rest of my decorations. This year, gift wrap in a gingerbread motif and plain craft paper add browns and natural tones to the red and green theme. It's a great idea use ribbons or bows in your accent colours to tie the look together.

5. Embrace Neutral Colors

Neutral colors like whites, creams, greys, and beiges have a way of conveying calmness and coziness. Luckily, you can easily find neutral Christmas decor ideas to work in your home.

I like to use white ornaments to add brightness to the Christmas tree. Ornaments in different textures, from plain matte balls to knitted ornaments and white berry garlands bring that wintry feeling. Likewise, wood tones of pinecones, wood beads, and birch bark are found throughout the room.

Consider neutral colors for your textiles. A faux fur warm blanket and neutral pillows allow the rest of your decor to shine while creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

6. Coffee table and accent tables

A coffee table or accent table provides an ideal surface for decorative elements. You can use it to display a tray, filled with seasonal decor like faux tree, candle, or books, or place a lantern on it to add light to a dark corner. A side table also gives your guests the perfect spot to set down their hot cocoa - a must for cozy nights!

7. Abundant Wood and Natural Elements

Like greenery, wood and natural elements are essential for setting a holiday scene. Go bold with a flocked Christmas tree or start small with pine cones and wooden ornaments. Add warmth with woven baskets, trays, a dough bowl, or branches. Take inspiration from the winter season and bring natural elements into your interior decor.

8. Focus on the Fireplace

If you are fortunate to have a fireplace in your living room or family room, it won't take much to create a cozy and welcoming focal point. Adorn the fireplace mantel with your unique own garland and incorporate elements that bring you joy. That can be anything from handmade paper chains and popcorn garlands, to glass ornaments, velvet ribbons, and vintage stockings. With a roaring fire, its the perfect opportunity to use the fireplace as a cozy backdrop to evening conversation through to Christmas morning gift opening.

9. Christmas Lights

Adding a different variety of light sources is a great way to make your room feel cozy and calm. From the white Christmas lights on the family Christmas tree to fairy lights woven into the mantel garland and glowing orbs on the bookshelf, I've tried to create a warm glow throughout the entire room.

Light allows your room to be used during both daylight and evening hours, and the twinkle lights beckon you to come in and sit by the big tree.

10. Cozy Blankets

Warm and fuzzy throw blankets are one of my favorite things to decorate with in winter. I have them placed on the arms of chairs or in baskets within arm's reach. This year, I've wrapped the seat cushions of my sofa in a soft flannel blanket. The effect is soft, comfortable and instant cozy factor!

11. Textured Tree Collar

A textured tree collar is a unique Christmas decoration that can help in creating an inviting holiday atmosphere. Choose a collar with a soft, plush material like faux fur or knit to add warmth and tactile appeal to the base of your Christmas tree.

12. Velvet or Satin Ribbon

You can elevate the festive ambiance of your home with the luxurious touch of velvet or satin ribbons. These materials exude sophistication and coziness simultaneously, making them perfect for creating a warm holiday aesthetic. I've incorporated velvet ribbons into our tree decorations to add a tactile element, making the tree more inviting.

13. Gold Ornaments and Accessories

The timeless elegance of gold adds a touch of luxury, creating a sense of opulence and comfort in your decor. To use gold effectively, intersperse it strategically throughout your room. Consider gold hued ornaments in the tree, brass bells placed on a bookshelf, or golden candlesticks. The reflective surface of gold plays with the light, contributing to a warm and inviting glow.

14. Reflective Surfaces

Consider incorporating an antique mirror, metallic accents, or glass ornaments into your holiday decorations. Mirrors can bounce light, making the space feel brighter and cozier. Additionally, glass or metallic ornaments with reflective surfaces catch and reflect the glow of twinkling lights, adding a magical touch to the festive setting.
