Discover budget-friendly teen loft bedroom ideas with quick transformation
tips. Explore functional and stylish designs in this Before & After
post
No matter how many times I've seen it happen, there's almost nothing more
satisfying as a homeowner than a Before & After transformation. Taking a
disappointing and under-utilized room and transforming it into something that
is functional, comfortable, and beautiful... it is the best kind of
feeling.
A few days ago, I shared my plans for a teen loft bedroom at the cottage. I'm happy to say we made those plans come to life in just one day. Let's have a look at these fun and easy cottage loft bedroom ideas!
A few days ago, I shared my plans for a teen loft bedroom at the cottage. I'm happy to say we made those plans come to life in just one day. Let's have a look at these fun and easy cottage loft bedroom ideas!
Creating a Functional Teen Loft Bedroom
When we started thinking about this teen bedroom makeover, it had to meet a
few criteria:
- Budget friendly. We had to make use of the existing furniture (sofa with chaise, and coffee table) and find affordable options for the new furniture
- Quick. Knowing that we could only work on this project while we are at the cottage on summer weekends, the transformation had to be quick to implement. I for one did not want to spend a lot of time moving furniture when I could be outside enjoying the lake or the beach!
- Furniture had to be portable and easy to assemble. Since we were bringing new furnishings from home and carrying them up to the loft, they had to fit into our car and be easily carried up the ladder.
The loft, an expansive open space with dual sloped sides, offers ample room
for creative loft bedroom ideas. The room makeover had to make use of the
ample floor space while taking into consideration the limited head room. I
found just the solution by separating the room into two zones, the sleeping
zone, and the lounging zone.
Optimizing A Teen Bedroom Layout
Design should start with determining the function of the room. Once you know
that function, you can then determine what kind of furniture you need to
fulfill that function. You can learn more about room design principles in my
course
Room Design Simplified.
For sleeping, I had a few requirements:
- a double sized bed to allow for sleeping for at least two people
- a low-profile bed frame to fit along the sloped wall
- a dresser or nightstand with some storage
- a plug-in bedside lamp she could use while reading in bed
- a comfortable mattress and pillows
- bedding with country style
And, all of this needed to be carried up the bedroom loft stairs.
I've never been more thankful for the invention of the mattress-in-a-box
concept and bed frames that come in pieces!
Enhancing Loft Bedroom Sleeping Area with Stylish Decor
The
solid wood bed frame
was the first purchase for the room.
This bed had great
reviews but we wanted a white finish so we just painted it.
The bed frame is low, clean-lined, and has no headboard. There is a small
door that sits behind the bed and is used to access our crawlspace storage.
I specifically opted for no headboard so we could keep that space
accessible. Two large Euro shams cover the door and make it comfortable for
Chloe while she's sitting up in bed.
The bed has
an Endy mattress (gifted). Chloe has an Endy mattress at home which she absolutely
loves so we knew we wanted one here too. It is comfortable, cushiony, and
keeps her cool even on hot summer nights.
She also uses
organic cotton sheets
and an
Endy Memory Foam pillow. I like a fairly soft pillow to sleep on so I didn't think I would like
memory foam, but I've used it and I like it! It feels sinkably soft while
still offering great support.
The rest of the bedding includes throw pillows from HomeSense and a
duvet cover from IKEA.
One of my favourite loft bedroom ideas is to use multifunctional furniture.
The dresser/nightstand took a bit of research to find. I wanted something
low enough to act as a nightstand, but also had good storage. Most
nightstands are narrow with only one or two small drawers. I didn't want a
full dresser in the room so I needed a nightstand that was wider than
normal.
This
two-drawer chest
was exactly what I was looking for. There's more than enough room for summer
shorts and t-shirts and the white finish and sleek design goes well with our
minimalist bed.
Above the nightstand, we've hung this
plug-in swing arm lamp. It was fairly easy to install and gives off a good amount of light. I
like the wood and white finish and also like how it looks tucked away or
pulled towards the bed.
In the opposite corner, we've created a little dressing zone. Chloe wanted
a full length mirror in her room and
this standing mirror
is just perfect. It's budget-friendly, and has hooks and rods on the back
to hang clothes and accessories - a must have for a teen loft bedroom! A
striped woven basket acts as a clothes hamper.
Chloe also wanted a folding screen for privacy when she's dressing but
we've discovered that you can barely see this back corner from ground
level so she may not need it, and we can save on floorspace without it.
Teen Bedroom Lounge Furniture
The opposite side of the room is where Chloe can relax and hang out with
friends. The
Soderhamn sofa
with chaise is one we've had for years and is still in great condition. We had
to switch which side of the sofa the chaise piece was on but luckily IKEA
makes that very easy.
An old coffee table and
new side table
bring function to this zone. From playing cards or boardgames, to watching a
movie on a laptop or sitting listening to music, this lounge area can do it
all. And it does! Chloe has been using it non-stop and says she loves having
her own sofa.
We've tucked a string of LED lights behind the sofa and it gives her room a
moody glow. I'll be keeping this decor idea in mind for future - its great for
loft bedrooms or any architecturally interesting space. I thought it might be
distracting seeing it from the ground, but it's not really obtrusive at all.
Yay for taking advantage of an odd ceiling and turning it into a fun feature!
Lastly, Chloe has made this space her own with her own choice of artwork.
There's the vintage metal 10 sign she bought at an antique fair. The
Keith Haring + others prints
from Etsy. The
floral market posters
above her bed. And the various images she collected from the internet and
we printed on paper.
I firmly believe that kids should have some say in how their room looks.
Luckily, Chloe has always loved white walls so she has fun personalizing
her space with art that's easy to move around and change out.
I really love the changes we've made here in the loft. It feels like its
own little bachelor apartment! And this girl loves it too. I swear she's
sleeping longer and lounging on her sofa more than ever - I barely notice
when she's in the cottage!
And isn't that really the end goal of any room? Design rooms that you love
to live in. Ready to transform your loft bedroom? Explore more inspiring
