10 Best Outdoor Christmas Decoration Ideas for Festive Curb Appeal
As the song goes, it's the most wonderful time of the year. Not only are gift
giving and festive celebrations on the horizon, but it's the time of year when
you can drive around the neighbourhood and see all the houses decorated for
the holiday season.
Outdoor Christmas decorations are essential for spreading the holiday spirit. They bring joy to you and to everyone who sees your home and are a fun way to brighten things up during what can be a cold and dreary winter season.
We decorate our exterior every holiday season but this might be my favorite
Christmas outdoor decor yet. We repeat our favourite ideas (garlands on the
fence!) but try and add new elements too. Our house sits on a prominent corner
and we've been called the "Christmas house" so we have a reputation to uphold,
lol!
From Christmas lights to a festive front porch, you can create a winter
wonderland that has holiday curb appeal. A combination of easy DIY ideas,
dollar store finds, and a mix of fresh and reusable decor are all you need to
welcome guests and fill the outside of your home with Christmas cheer.
Here's 10 outdoor Christmas decor ideas for any outdoor space.
Outdoor Christmas Decoration Ideas
Paint the front door
You might not think of painting the front door for the festive season, but it
is a quick and easy way to make your home stand out. This is a simple DIY
project that takes only a day to do.
Craving a bold refresh? Opt for a colour that shouts holiday like a deep berry
red, icy blue, or fresh green. Or go for a more muted tone that enhances your
decorations. We painted our door a saturated classic green (Celtic Green by
Benjamin Moore). The red berry wreath is a perfect addition and creates a
traditional Christmas palette.
Fill an urn with fresh greenery, pine cones, and ornaments
You can easily buy a pre-made arrangement but I encourage you to give this
simple and creative DIY a try. Check out my post on
how to create an outdoor arrangement in 8 easy steps. Using natural elements such as magnolia leaves, pine boughs and pine cones,
you can make an interesting and personalized arrangement that fits with your
rustic decor.
And don't hesitate to be creative in your elements. Do you want to spray paint
hydrangeas with metallic paint, or incorporate giant ornaments or string
lights? Or make an urn filled with branches and leafy stems plucked from your
garden? Create outdoor decor that is uniquely you.
Put a tree on the porch
When it comes to the evergreen tree, more is more! You don't have to limit
your Christmas trees to indoors. Create the look of a lush forest by adding
mini trees to your front porch decor.
An outdoor Christmas tree can add sparkle and a dash of the unexpected to your
exterior decorations. You can use real outdoor trees or faux ones. For a
rustic look, place the trees in wicker baskets or large vintage buckets.
Decorate them with ornaments or leave them bare for a minimal yet seasonal
look.
Add seasonal patterns with pillows, a throw blanket, and gift wrap
Complete your porch decorations by bringing in textiles and materials with
wintery motifs. This not only adds texture and colour, but it can really set a
welcoming feeling. Plaid blankets and pillows always feel right for the
holidays and are the best way to repeat colours in your decor. Add whimsy by
using your Christmas gift wrap to wrap empty gift boxes. Just make sure they
don't blow away when winter storms come!
Add winter gear to your display such as ice skates, skis, snowshoes, and sleds
Have a love of vintage pieces and things that have a history? Bring life and
nostalgia to your front yard displays with this great idea. Scour flea markets
or thrift stores for vintage accessories like skates, skis, and snowshoes.
They are an easy addition to your Christmas porch and help conjure up cozy
holiday memories. The more worn in and used, the better. Add some fairy lights
to ensure your pretty decor is visible day and night.
Hang garland on fences
Garlands are classic outdoor decorations. Using them the full length of a
fence is a great way to create a dramatic and eye-catching display. The
fencing provides a natural backdrop to make your garland stand out.
At our home, we've used garland on the fencing on both sides of our corner
lot. This helps to frame our property and create a complete outdoor display. I
like to use faux garlands indoors, but for outdoors, only real garlands will
do. You can keep them looking fresh by spraying them before hanging with a
product like Wilt Pruf, but I find that they do just fine once the
temperatures hit freezing. Layering garlands can also help you create a
dramatic and full look.
Add bows to outdoor lighting, architectural elements, and garden ornaments
Bows are a simple way to add colour to your outdoor holiday decor. You can buy
pre-made bows from the dollar store or Home Depot or create your own DIY
Christmas decorations. Just use plaid or red ribbon (preferably wired) to tie
bows. Hang them on your outdoor lighting, at the corners of your garage door,
or on fence and porch posts, or hand rails. Do you have lighted reindeer lawn
ornaments or garden statues in your front yard? Tie a bow on your figurines
too!
Put twinkling lights everywhere
If you were to put up only one outdoor Christmas decoration, make it Christmas
lights. Home Alone features my favorite holiday movie decor - who can forget
all of their windows and bushes adorned with glistening white lights. You can
use string lights to wrap your garland, hang from the eaves, or wrap trees. If
you are using white lights, make sure your lights have the same tone (warm or
cool white).
Also consider adding different types of lights. From tiny fairy lights in your
urns, icicle lights lining the eaves, to net lights that light up your shrubs,
there's endless varieties and applications for lights.
Hang wreaths on doors and gates
Nothing says welcome more than a Christmas wreath on your front door. This
traditional accessory can set the tone for the rest of your Christmas
decorating ideas. Go rustic with a grapevine wreath or set a more traditional
tone with boxwood or cedar. You can hang your door wreaths using ribbon, 3M
hooks, or a door hanger.
For a fun touch, add wreaths to your gates or side door as well. A wreath on a
passage way really enhances that idea of welcoming people into your
home.
Hang wreaths on windows and the chimney
For classic Christmas decor, hang wreaths from your windows. Getting the
wreaths to stay up can be tricky, but here's 7 ways to hang wreaths on
windows. We play up the symmetry of our mid century Colonial style by hanging
wreaths in each window.
Last year, we added remote controlled LED candles to the wreaths which was so
much fun and spotted by lots of passers-by. We also hang a large wreath on our
chimney. I change out the wreath decorations each year, using a mix of giant
Christmas ornaments, bright red berries and fresh greenery. The wreath is hung
using fishing line and attached to a permanent hook we've drilled into the
chimney brick.
Getting the exterior of your home to look festive and welcoming is no easy
task. With some classic ideas and easy DIYs, you can make your home a standout
in the neighbourhood. Is your home ready for the season?
