Client Design: A Little Girl's Bedroom with Classic Decor

Are you looking ahead to fall? We managed to finish up a few late summer projects in the last week (more on that soon!), but I'm ready to sit inside until this August heat subsides. One fun thing I have been working on indoors is e-Design. I'm so thrilled many of you have reached out about my design services. From cottage bedrooms to virtual consultations via Zoom to family room layouts, the work has been varied and interesting.

Today I'm sharing one of my recent projects, a little girl's bedroom with classic details.

Alison reached out for help in transitioning this room belonging to her four-year old daughter into a big girl room. I love designing kids rooms so I was up to the challenge!

Design Brief:

  • Create a room for sleeping, reading and playing
  • Give the room a more finished look
  • Provide suggestions for new bedding, curtains, and artwork
  • Keep the existing furniture (bed, nightstand, bookshelf, tallboy dresser)
  • The glider will go, freeing up additional space
  • Possibly use the three rolls of this striped wallpaper which the client already had on hand
  • Make the bedroom feel cozy and classic

The room had many things going for it. It was a good size with a straightforward layout. The furniture was in great condition and the Simply White colour could work with many design schemes.

In addition to the specific asks, I follow a few general rules when designing for children:

  • Don't make the room design too "themey". Kids' tastes change quickly and they'll quickly outgrow that princess bedding or racing car shaped bed
  • Use bright colours as the accent and not the main element (even if your 5 year old insists her walls need to be painted bubblegum pink!)
  • Opt for decor and accessories that can be used other parts of the home later on
  • Allow kids to have input into their room design. Make sure the room is a reflection of their tastes and interest
  • Leave room for kids to be kids. That means baskets for stuffies, floor space for playing, and shelves to display their art work or crafts. The rest of your home might be curated to adult tastes but this is a room to be more free and playful with design
With those guidelines in mind, here's my vision for a traditional and classic bedroom for a little girl:

Little Girl Bedroom Ideas

My jumping off point for this room was the Serena and Lily Acadia Stripe wallpaper. It was a classic ticking stripe pattern that felt both timeless and modern. It would be used as an accent wall behind the bed, keeping the other three walls in their medium tone grey paint.

The blue in the wallpaper was repeated in the bedding, featuring a smaller scale stripe. The white border lent a crispness to the scheme, preventing it from feeling too sugary sweet.

But it is a girl's room so I couldn't resist adding in blush pink and neutral accents. The Willow Extra Long pillow features a luxe leather piping detail. It's balanced with the more feminine Blair Sketched Floral pillow.

That soft pink is continued in the artwork. The Paris Building Watercolour art hanging above the bed is striking yet affordable. It's an instant download which can be printed at a local printer and popped into an Ikea frame. Printed at about 24"x36", it will help provide a strong focal point in the room.

The botanical Roots I and Roots II prints are also downloadable files. I would print these at 16"x20" and place them in matching gold frames. Mounted horizontally, they would be just as wide as the bookshelf below. Did you notice how the sketched nature of the prints echo the floral pillow and the cream and grey tribal rug? It's a subtle detail which helps to make the room feel thought-out and complete.

Reading Corner

The window and glider area provide an opportunity to add functionality to this room. I'd replace the glider with a smaller child's chair. This barrel chair features tufting and pink velvet fabric. What a cozy place to curl up with your favourite picture book!

Finally, I've suggested pulling this corner together with a natural linen curtain with pom pom fringe and blackout lining. Paired with a brushed gold rod, it's a sophisticated and classic look.

Overall, this big girl bedroom has ended up with a soft feminine, Parisian feel. Even though we reused many pieces, a few select accessories and a softer colour scheme freshen the look. It's a room that both this little girl and her mom are sure to love!
