DIY Fabric Coasters With Nautical Style
Is it warm enough for summer drinks on the patio where you are? We had snow
(!!!) this weekend so I'll have to wait for things to warm up, but that
doesn't stop me from dreaming about sunny summer days. Today I'm joining on
the Seasonal Simplicity tour hosted by Krista at
The Happy Housie
with 16 other bloggers to bring you simple and fun Summer DIY's to try. If you
have some spare fabric and a sewing machine, you'll want to give these
easy DIY fabric coasters a try!
Handmade Fabric Coasters
My favourite kind of DIYs are ones that are actually useful but also stylish.
I was in need of coasters for the basement kitchenette we're putting in for
the
One Room Challenge, and these cute coasters were fun and super simple to sew up. I've used
striped and plaid patterns to work with the nautical and coastal style of my
basement, but you can use any fabric or pattern that suits your decor. These
handmade fabric coasters could also make a lovely hostess gift. Gift these
fabric coasters with a pot luck dish and you'll always be invited to the bbq!
This is an easy sewing project that you can tackle even if you're a beginner.
It's a great way to use up scrap fabrics and the few supplies needed are
likely ones you already have on hand.
How To Make Fabric Coasters
Materials required:
- 1 or 2 types of fabric for the outside of the coaster
- 1 fabric for the inside, or fusible fleece
- Heat n Bond hem tape
- Round object, 5" to 6" in diameter
Tools needed:
- sewing machine
- thread
- scissors
- tape measure
- iron
Fabric Coaster Tutorial:
- Select your fabrics. Cotton or linens work well for coasters. You can use a single fabric for both the top or bottom of the coaster, or use two different fabrics for a reversible coaster.
- Find a round object 5 to 6" in diameter. Use this object to trace circles on your fabric.
- Cut out circles from your top and bottom fabrics
- Use a third fabric for the inside of the coaster, to give it some weight and body. I used a thicker cotton canvas. You can also use fusible fleece. Trace circles on this fabric and cut inside the line. You'll want this circle slightly smaller than your top and bottom circles.
- On the bad side of your top fabric, put two strips of Heat n Bond hem tape. Lay the middle fabric on top. Iron and set aside to cool.
- Place the top fabric on the bottom fabric, with the good sides facing in. Sew a 1/2 inch hem around the top and bottom fabrics. Leave a 2" opening.
- Turn the coaster inside out. Use a chopstick to push out all of the seams to get a nice crisp circle shape.
- At the opening, fold in the edges of the top and bottom fabrics and sew to close the seam.
- Iron your coaster to give it a finished look.
These cute coasters look so pretty on the table! I love how they add that
unexpected bit of beach decor. Time to bring on all of the summery drinks!
