Easy Outdoor Holiday Decorating 

1. Christmas Decorations For The Fence

It's easy to attach Christmas decorations to a fence.

• First, use black zip ties to combine ropes of garland together to create one garland long enough to span the length of your fence. 
• If you're adding lights to your garland, do that next. Wrap your string of lights around the garland, weaving it between and under leaves to keep it secure.
• Next use long zip ties to connect the garland and lighting to each fence post. Ensure that every swag is even and dips down the same distance. 
• Finally, attach outdoor bows to the garland using heavy floral wire.

2. Lights Along The Roof

Christmas lights along the roof line are a classic look that will never go out of style. Whether coloured or traditional white, lights along the roof always look pleasant to passers by. Our preference is to use C9 LED bulbs that are a good size to be seen from the street. Using Christmas lights with built-in clips will make installing them much easier and will help to keep your lines straight.

3. Outdoor Christmas Planters

Outdoor Christmas decorating is not all about the lighting. Be sure to include holiday outdoor decorations that will look beautiful during the day too. Outdoor Christmas planters are a lovely way to bring in colour and texture. Flanking the front door, they create a welcoming front entrance and encourage your guests to step inside.

Once again, I followed my no-fail 8 step process to creating a Christmas planter. A clip-in cardinal helps carry the red colour scheme throughout the decor. Red is a choice colour for outdoor decorations as it highly visible against the snow.

4. Wreaths On Windows

If you want create instant nostalgic appeal with your outdoor holiday decor, hang wreaths on your exterior windows. Wreaths on windows accented with bows is a timeless look. You can also hang wreaths on your chimney, above your garage, or above or on front door. Make sure to scale your wreath properly to each area.

For an added touch, clip in flameless battery operated taper candles on your wreaths. Opt for electric candles with a remote control and you can bring a vintage look to your lighting instantly.

5. Christmas Porch Decorations

My Christmas porch decorations tend to be a variation of this look every year. What can I say - I love a rustic, cozy, cabin style front porch!

These DIY Christmas decorating ideas for the front porch are easy and quick. Vintage snowshoes, old ski poles painted red, and thrifted skates form the basis of this outdoorsy look. Birch poles and a small tree in a stoneware crock flank each side and bring texture and height to the display. Finishing the look is as simple as adding plaid pillows and throws and faux wrapped gifts.

6. Garlands Around Porch Columns

Garlands can be used in so many different ways. In the past, we've had them draped along the sides of the front door. This year, we decided to wrap them around the porch columns.

You might be wondering how to wrap a garland around a column. Our method was simple:

• Insert a nail into the back top of the column
• If you are using lighting, weave your lighting around the garland.
• Use heavy floral wire to create a hook loop at the top end of the garland
• Hook the garland onto the nail. Wrap the garland around the column and secure it at the bottom with a zip tie.
• Attach a bow at the top of the garland if desired
