One Room Challenge | Week 6 | Calm and Serene Master Bedroom Reveal
And we've made it! We're here at the end of another round of the six week One Room Challenge. I couldn't be more thrilled to reveal our Master Bedroom but first, a HUGE thank you to Linda at Calling It Home for once again organizing this fun and immensely exciting event. I was honoured to be amongst the group of 20 Featured Designers and loved the chance to work with the ORC's amazing sponsors. Things did get a bit stressful at the end but no matter how stressful the ORC gets, the results are always worth it!! If you're new here, I'm Jennifer. I blog about renovations of our colonial-style home here in Toronto and run a community, education, and mentoring hub for content creators.
Time to show you what we've done in our home... and guess what? We've been secretly working on TWO projects over the last six weeks! I'm sharing our master bedroom today and finally revealing our new craft room in partnership with Home Depot Canada next Wednesday so come back for that. Yay for more finished rooms!
But for today, let's take a look at the Master Bedroom. It was dark and disjointed with a poor layout and not calming in the least. With paint, new furniture and accessories, and a six-week deadline, we've transformed it into this:
Grown up master bedroom, where did you come from?! To say we love our new bedroom is an understatement. It feels bright, serene, and makes me want to lie on the bed and take a nap when I look at it.
Can I show you the Befores to remind you how far we've come?
This room is a testament to the power of decorating. Having just moved to this house a year ago, we had already bought a new bed, side tables, rug, and chandelier and all of those furniture pieces remained. As pretty as those pieces were, they were overshadowed by the intense blue walls and odd coved ceiling of the original room.
Now the bed takes center stage. As with all of our rooms, I wanted the look to be classic yet welcoming. Chic table lamps and accessories add a whole layer of sophistication that was missing before. To keep things from feeling too formal, I've dressed the bed in a relaxed striped linen duvet, a graphic floral pillow, and the softest coverlet and shams.
Placing the bed in front of the window was a bit of a gamble but it paid off. It made the room feel so much bigger and created a focal point for the room. To balance the tall headboard, I framed the bed with gorgeous and textured plaid drapes from Tonic Living. The black drapery hardware and fling rods (we're fancy like that!) help ground the airy palette.
The most dramatic change was painting the room in Farrow & Ball's Wimborne White. Then we focused on giving the room more weight and substance: 1960's trim was replaced with heftier moulding from Metrie around the doors and windows, and baseboards were beefed up. Finicky (and too short) bifold doors were replaced with modern shaker doors from Metrie and the sleekest of gold handles courtesy of Emtek. You'll notice we painted the walls, ceiling, and trim the same paint colour. It has effectively made the coved ceiling disappear - exactly what I hoped for!
I stuck to a neutral palette of grey, cream, white, and warm wood punctuated by hits of black and soft blue greens. Our last bedroom was also a warm white and I love the versatility it offers; just change up your bedding and accessories for a whole new look. Plus, I've found it very calming to fall asleep in a warm white room.
Changing the orientation of the room had a positive effect on how this room functions. Moving the bed opened up this solid wall for display and placement of the dresser and vanity.
I wanted this long wall to be a focal point, but not too distracting. I imagined waking up and facing this wall... what would I want to look at? The taupe patterned wallpaper, Aranami by Farrow & Ball, combined with the amazing photography by Gray Malin, feels interesting but still restful. I think it's important to balance pattern with white space and give your eye moments of rest.
I'm not one for a lot of clutter so I've accessorized the dresser with a few beautiful and simple pieces. The gingham vase and emerald book ends provide hits of colour while the vases and marble box add texture.
I've tucked my vanity and a fun striped chair into this corner. This is my personalized and pretty corner of the room. I love having art from Minted, little trinket dishes, and treasured photos in chic frames to greet me as I get ready each morning. It starts my day off in a good mood to have an organized spot to call my own.
A few of my favourite possessions... my mother's awesome beaded necklace from the 60's, a thrifted vase, vacation photos, and my wedding rings, displayed on this sweet scalloped marble tray.
There's more pretty accents hidden in the closet. I painted the closet walls Pink Ground for contrast and to make me smile each time I open these doors! The Small Lilac Bow print from Chairish and my summer hat add a bit of unexpected colour and whimsy.
To the left of the closet, a handsome striped bench from HomePop provides a spot to sit... or let's be honest, a place to dump the clothes I'm too lazy to hang, ha! I've filled the area above with more botanical art. I really love the large scale of these prints and how they once again detract from the weird ceiling angles.
The finishing details really bring this room to life and give it that warm, cozy feeling I was after. I went for a mix of textured and sleek, polished and relaxed, masculine and feminine accents. In the end, we've created a room that delights our senses while we're awake and provides a restful spot when we're ready to fall asleep. I truly couldn't ask for more.
