A Visit To RH Toronto, The Gallery At Yorkdale

When it comes to retail environments, I've always looked forward to stepping inside Restoration Hardware stores. Whether or not you're a fan of their furnishings, RH definitely makes you feel something. Moody, luxe, and upscale are words that come to mind when I think of RH which is why I was excited to visit their next-generation design store, RH Toronto, The Gallery at Yorkdale.

Spread over four floors and almost 70,000 square feet of interior and exterior space, RH Toronto is impressive. It has the feel of a palatial mansion, with a light-filled central hall and barrel-vaulted hallways extending out on either side. It also features a courtyard cafe, a barista bar, and rooftop park. Retail space or new hangout spot for the design crowd? I suspect it will end up being both.

It was a gloomy, rainy day when we visited but that didn't stop us from starting our tour at the rooftop terrace. The outdoor furnishings looked spectacular, complemented by the birch trees, giant planters, trickling fountains, and a view of the Toronto skyline.

Chandeliers everywhere!
Hello family, in giant 8 foot mirror!
I lost count of how many rooms there were on each floor (maybe fifteen?). If Drake ever invited me into his Bridle Path mansion, I imagine it would feel a little like the RH Modern floor with lots of leather sofas, sleek furnishings, and contemporary art.

I can't even remember which floor these following photos were taken on... and therein lies the problem. Though immaculately decorated, the rooms started to feel the "same". The sizes of the bedrooms were the same, the layouts of the living room vignettes were the same, the minimal colour palettes were the same. It was difficult to differentiate the rooms from one another.

If you're in the market for a sofa, a bed, a bathroom vanity, or a chandelier then you'll have plenty of choice as those items were in abundance and you can see them in situ. Though I was a bit confused by the actual purchase process; not all of the items had a price tag and it seemed you had to track down one of the few sales staff in the maze of rooms to have them write down your order on their clip boards. I can't imagine it makes for an easy shopping experience... if I'm looking for a table lamp, will I have to visit the 40+ rooms to compare and find the one lamp I like?

Sadly, there was no RH Baby & Child, or RH Teen products in the store either. I wish they would have given up some of the abundant living room space for the Child and Teen products. It would have given me more reason to visit the store on a more regular basis.

Have you been to RH Toronto? What was your experience like?
