Spun Goods

As a blogger, I sometimes get invited to be involved in fun things but it's most satisfying when those fun things can do good and help bring awareness to worthwhile organizations. Recently, Lindsey at Spun Studio asked me to be one of their blogger collaborators and help bring to life a collection of homemade textiles that will be displayed and sold at their Spring Show fundraiser.

Spun Studio is a social enterprise of Sistering, an organization which serves homeless, marginalized, and low-income women in Toronto. At Spun Studio, these women learn to develop their sewing, knitting, and weaving skills and build their sense of belonging and self-esteem along the way. They are able to create some very beautiful things.

To bring awareness to Spun Studio and the custom textile services it offers, they've asked six bloggers to come up with original designs which the studio will create. For my project, I've designed a pair of throw rugs using yarn generously donated by Gemini Fibres. I can't show you my design but here's a peek at my inspiration... think chunky, nautical, black and white... a taste of summer to come:

I was so intrigued by this process of designing that it inspired me to create a new project. Let's just say I can't get enough of black and white these days. More on that to come!

In the meantime, if you're in the Toronto area, mark your calendar and come and join us on June 10th at Artscape Youngplace, 6pm-9pm. Tickets are now available. All the bloggers' designs have been under wraps so I can't wait to see wait to see what everyone has come up with. I hope to see you there!
