Great Reads 2013 - part I

This is truly the most wonderful time of the year, isn't it? I hope you've found time to slow down and relax amidst all the holiday festivities. If you're like me, you're probably using this quiet time to catch up on your reading. For the next few days, I'll be sharing a few blog posts you might want to add to your reading list.

This is the fourth year for the Great Reads tour (you can see the previous tours here) and I always look forward to putting it together. I've asked some of my favourite bloggers to highlight two of their posts, their most popular post and their favourite post, and this year I've also included one of my picks. There is a wealth of great blog posts out there that deserve a second look. I hope you enjoy these great reads and the rest of your holidays!

*****

Rachel says: I write and design at Pencil Shavings Studio where I've never met a color I didn't love. Favorite topics include color, style, interior design, family life, and the intersection of all of them.

Most Popular Post - How to survive growing out your hair (surprisingly enough!!)
Favourite Post - Colorful Living Spaces with the Land of Nod
Rambling Renovators' Pick - Rachel's branding projects are always inspiring. I love her playful yet sophisticated use of colour

FC says: Freckles Chick is my life's highlight reel, where I share snippets of life with our daughter, renovating/decorating our house, & all the little moments that feel big in between. I strive to find inspiration & humor in everyday life & if I've made you laugh via my blog, my day has been made. Let's get weird & sarcastic up in here.

Most Popular Post - My most popular post this year is the one about Quinn's Art Table (an IKEA Latt hack). It was such a simple project that has inspired endless hours of creative fun.
Favourite Post - My favorite post I've written this year is Reflections, where I shared my honest thoughts on motherhood. Spoiler: I'm still waiting for that Mommy of the Year award....
Rambling Renovators' Pick - FC's honest thoughts about Adventures In Breastfeeding. It can be a difficult, guilt-inducing journey but oh so worth every moment of it.

Kristine says: Featuring real projects, fresh ideas and evocative inspiration with a focus on encouraging, empowering and enlightening others, The Painted Hive is an online journal chronicling the transformation of an unremarkable house into a beautiful yet liveable home - on a budget!

Most Popular Post - Simple yet effective (and attractive!) storage solutions are always fairly popular, and for this reason I think my narrow DIY behind door bookshelves were really well received in 2013.
Favourite Post - Looking back through my 2013 archives, all of my little room makeovers make me smile. My favourite is this one about my master bedroom. It demonstrates how the thoughtful introduction of a few simple accessories can completely change the feel of a space.
Rambling Renovators' Pick - Petite and compact, Kristine's home office goes to show that style and function can come in any size

Alex says: My name is Alex and I blog over at northstory. You can usually find me buried under a pile of craft and DIY project supplies on what is formerly known as my kitchen table. My husband can also attest to me slowly starting to take over his work bench in the garage. When I am not chasing after my kids, I am probably out scouring some awesome vintage finds at thrift stores to bring home and hide in my basement. I love making cards, have an unhealthy addiction to kraft paper and always have time for a good beer with friends. All of which I blog about while trying to survive life in the suburbs when I should be living in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere.

Most Popular Post - My DIY Hanging Planter. I honestly made this spur of the moment because I have so many embroidery hoops collected from thrift stores. So I thought "Hey, let's see how this goes". It did so well that Apartment Therapy featured it twice. Isn't that how it always happens though? The project you don't give a second thought about takes off and the one you lose sleep trying to finish barely cracks the top 100 in page views.
Favourite Post - From an emotional point of view The Challenges of Being Creative as a Blogger hit a nerve with a lot of bloggers in the best way possible. But my favourite DIY post this year is the one I just did. It's my Upcycled Christmas Wreath. I had this project idea in my head for over a year but couldn't do it til this Christmas season. By the way, the embroidery hoop thing in the posts is a big coincidence, I swear.
Rambling Renovators' Pick - Alex's weekly northstory notes are so awesome, I can't pick just one. Seriously, put your feet up, get cozy, and get lost in Alex's way with words.

Come back tomorrow for more Great Reads!
