#RockTheRental: Feminine Chic Bedroom

Did you have a good weekend? HandyMan took some time off last week so we were able to get the stairwell to the basement almost finished. We're so close to the end of the basement reno now. I'll share more on that tomorrow, but today, I wanted to show you the inspiration board for my sister's rental bedroom.

My younger sister is the fashiony one, the one who lets me borrow her chic accessories from and gives me opinions on outfits when I want to step out of my work-at-home-mom wardrobe comfort zone. So I knew her room should share a similar style to the clothes she wears: feminine, a little flowy, with a glamourous edge. Here's what I came up with:

Since we're working with a limited budget, I really wanted to be selective on where to splurge and where to save. Generally, the pieces that would last longer and could move with my sister to a future home were where we should invest some money.

The showstopper in this room will definitely be the tall headboard. Since headboards (and beds generally) will last you for decades, its an area where I feel you should be willing to pay for the quality and look that you want. We had a very specific design in mind - a modern wingback style with nailhead trim - so we planned on working with my friend Staci, re-upholsterer extraordinaire at Switch Studio, to get exactly what we were looking for. We'll dress the bed with a collection of fabrics.

The rest of the room will be a mix of vintage and thrifted pieces and inexpensive finds. One of the first pieces purchased for the room was the chevron rug. I know that chevron has been over-played in the blogging world, but I think to "real" homeowners, it's a classic style that has longevity. Plus, RugsUSA was having one of their amazing sales so we got it at a crazy low price!

My sister has always liked the look of the dresser in my living room so I put a similar piece in her room. I've balanced it with a modern Ikea desk and vanity chair that can act as a dressing/side table. To keep things feeling feminine, I've recommended drapery in this stunning floral print. I literally gasped when I saw this fabric as I knew my sister would just love it and it would "make" the room. Of course, we need some bling so I suggest this shimmery chandelier over the bed and a gallery of gold frames on the opposite wall. We'll be bringing this room together over the coming weeks. I'm a little envious of this dream bedroom... I could move right in!
