The Beauty Products for Women Over 40 I Rely On
The Sephora savings event is on now and if you're anything like me, this is your
signal to stock up on your old reliable beauty favourites (and perhaps invest
in a new palette or two that will make you feel current even though you
haven't updated your makeup routine since Friends was on the air.)
Or maybe that's just me.
I never used to worry about my skincare. I'd go to bed with makeup on, I'd do little beyond moisturizing daily. But over time, my skin started looking dull, the age spots appeared and I needed "more".
Even if you're not in a mood to shake things up, chances are midlife is
making you pay more attention to your skin and beauty. Things change on the
daily at this age, amirite?
Over 40:
- your skin type might be different. My skin went from normal to dry, especially during the winter, and my old moisturizers just weren't having the same impact
- products like under eye concealer that once effectively hidethings (ie. dark underye circles from staying up way too late scrolling Instagram) now highlight the wrinkles and fine lines
- things you thought would never happen to you - thinning eyebrows, a double chin, saggy skin - are staring back at you in the mirror
- the matte foundation, concealer, blush look you've relied on for decades suddenly looks old and dated
- age spots, freckles, skin tags, wrinkles, stray hairs... new ones appear every day and in the weirdest of places
- you have no idea how to achieve that glowy, dewy look your teenager effortlessly puts together. Perhaps you need to watch the TikToks she's been learning all her makeup tricks from
Isn't it ironic that you finally feel most true to who you are in your
40's and 50's... but you don't recognize the person staring back at you in
the mirror?
While I can never bring back the 'old me', updating the beauty products I
use is one way to love who I am now. If you'd like to find products for
your changing self, here's the ones I'm currently relying on as a 54 woman
who is determined to look and feel the best she ever has in her life.

Skincare products for women over 40:
I never used to worry about my skincare. I'd go to bed with makeup on, I'd do little beyond moisturizing daily. But over time, my skin started looking dull, the age spots appeared and I needed "more".
Lately, I've added
gua sha to my
skincare routine to help sculpt my face and really help absorb the products.
Daily toner,
using products with
retinol and
niacinamide and
specific
nighttime serums
have really made my skin look its best. I took my good skin for granted but
now I'm actively working to keep it nourished and healthy.
I've always been into makeup. Blue eyeshadow and frosted lips in the 80's gave
way to Mac Spice lip liner and black liquid eye liner in the 90's (and 2000's
if I'm being honest, lol!). These days, in a blow to my ego, makeup is a bit
more focused on "hiding" imperfections than it is adding colour and shade.

It starts with a good primer and then
skin color corrector
and
under eye concealer
(I swear by Bobbi Brown products for this. They don't get cakey or emphasize
the fine lines like other products do). The
foundation I've been using for
years is now paired with
contour and
highlighter to
bring dimension. And yes, the
eyebrows need
much more work now (they are thinning at an alarming rate!) and so do the
lips.

Gone are the days when I could rely on drugstore shampoo, the cheapest
mousse, and hairspray to get my hair ready. Now, the hair is thinning and
coloured and needs maintenance (if you color your hair at home,
One N Only Permanent Hair Color is excellent at covering the greys). I am obsessed with this
shampoo and conditioner
and
hair mask
which we discovered in Japan. This
hair spray
adds the perfect finishing touch.
